The Alhambra

A more general post about our time in Spain is forthcoming, but honestly, this took precedence....
Our friend Linnea came to visit us in Spain, and we decided that it was a good excuse to rent a car and do a few-day road trip to Granada, and visit….
The Alhambra: a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Spain’s most visited landmarks.
The Alhambra is an enormous palace and fortress complex overlooking Granada. Built primarily during the 13th and 14th centuries under the Nasrid dynasty—the last Muslim rulers of Iberia—it is one of the most complete and best-preserved examples of Islamic architecture in Europe. Its hilltop position on the Sabika hill allowed it to function both as a royal residence and a strategic military stronghold.
At the heart are the Nasrid Palaces, a series of interconnected courtyards, halls, and private chambers designed with intricate geometric patterns, arabesque stucco work, and calligraphic inscriptions. Reflecting pools, fountains, and carefully controlled sightlines create a sense of calm and introspection, emphasizing the Islamic architectural principle of paradise as a garden.
These palaces are often considered the highlight of the complex (and require a special, assigned entry time), but frankly, it is hard to say that it was more special than many of the other portions of the hilltop. Whether talking about the Generalife Gardens, the Alcazaba Military Fortress (the oldest structure still standing) or the Palace of Carlos V (which came after the Christians re-conquered the peninsula in 1492), each section/building/garden was equally breathtaking.
The Alhambra was one of the most spectacular places I’ve ever been.
And none of it can be captured in photos.
It just can’t.
...But here are some feeble attempts.

Thank you for sharing your photos and thoughts on the Alhambra! Beautiful! I really enjoyed my visit there as well; however, it was a long time ago. I think we need to visit again. Continue to enjoy your travel adventures which I will continue to enjoy reading!!!
All the best. Jane
Oh my! Jaw-dropping beauty, patterns, natural colors. How were those workmen (and women?) trained to be so skillful? Poetry in stone and wood and lines. C & I never made it to the Alhambra in Granada in 2024 (sold out), so I highly recommend the also-astonishing Alcazar in Sevilla and Mezquita Cathedral in Cordaba. Sometimes I feel my body does not have the inner space to admit all that my eyes take in.
